Installing the Beta

Preparation

Be aware that you are about to test beta software. Please make sure you have a recent backup of your Things database on the desktop.

  • To make a backup, go to: (Your Home Folder)/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/
  • Make a duplicate of the file "Database.xml" and put it somewhere safe.
  • Should any data loss occur during the testing of the sync feature, you can later copy this duplicate back into this folder to restore your old database (Things must not running while doing this!).

Your iPhone version of Things will not be affected by the beta testing, but it is always a good idea to make a backup of that as well using iTunes.

Once a Things database has been synced with an iPhone, it can no longer be opened with older versions of Things. Please keep this in mind when using Things on multiple Macs.

Installing Things 0.9.4 (Mac)

  • You can download the desktop version that enables syncing here: Things_0.9.4.dmg
  • Just replace your previous Things version (which should be located in /Applications/) with this version.
  • Or just use Things' built-in update mechanism.

Installing Things touch 1.1 beta (iPhone)

  1. Disconnect your iPhone/iPod if it is plugged in.
  2. Download the iPhone version of Things here: Things_Touch_1.1_beta2.zip. When you extract the zip file, you will get 2 files:
    • CulturedCodeAdHocProfile.mobileprovision
    • Things.app
  3. Make sure iTunes is running. Then select both files in the finder and drag them onto the iTunes icon in the dock.
  4. Go into iTunes and select the Applications source. Make sure that "Things beta" is listed there.
  5. Plug in your iPhone/iPod. If automatic syncing is enabled, iTunes will automatically copy Things beta onto your device. If it is disabled, you can right-click (control-click) on the device and select "Sync". Once syncing is complete, you should see the Things beta app on your home screen. If anything went wrong, start again at step 1: "Disconnect..."

Enable Syncing

  1. Make sure both your Mac and your iPhone/iPod are connected to your network.
  2. Start up Things on the Mac, go to Preferences > iPhone Sync and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. The very first time you sync, it might take a while depending on the number of to-dos in your database. Make sure your iPhone doesn't go to sleep while syncing. You can prevent this by changing "auto-lock" to "never" in your iPhone's settings (or tap on the screen from time to time). We will have this fixed by the release of 1.1.
  4. Happy testing :)

Testing

As a reminder, here are the new features of this version:

  1. Syncing
  2. Improved entry-dialog for new to-dos
  3. Icon badge (enable it in iPhone's Settings)
  4. Preference to perform automatic logging on every app launch (in iPhone's Settings)
  5. Spanish, French and Japanese localization
